That really depends on where in the novel you are looking. Immediately after the revolution, there is hope in the enthusiasm displayed by all the animals. They have a new lease on life, the knowledge that everything they do is for the good of the community rather than for a single tyrannical leader, and the hope of retirement at the end of their careers rather than slaughter. By the novel's end, however, they have none of these things. In fact, things are worse because they no longer have the Revolutionary spirit instilled in them by Old Major; this spirit has been killed by the pigs' duplicity in convincing them that they are already free.
