Some critics point out ways in which Animal Farm deviates from an allegorical representation of totalitarianism under Stalin. Naming the pig "Napoleon," for example, suggest a wider criticism of totalitarian rule because the name links to a specific historical figure, and Old Major could be Lenin, could be Marx--and does it matter when analyzing the Stalinist regime if we trace its malice and failure to one theorist or the other? That it is a satire of totalitarian rule there is no doubt however: it is the closeness to Stalinism itself that causes some bickering.
