The milk and the apples are symbols of the luxuries in life. Although they are not necessary for survival, they make life more pleasant. After the revolution, the animals believe they will be able to share in the finer, more luxurious aspects of living on Animal Farm. However, the pigs take all the apples and milk for themselves. This is one of the first indications that the pigs think they are superior to the rest of the animals and intend to take over the farm in much the same manner as Jones had. Thus, even though the animals thought they would share in the good things of life, their leaders, whether Jones or the pigs, usurp these things for themselves. This echoes the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution when Stalin and his cronies lived very well while many of the common people saw little improvement in their lives.
