At first, they served as a unifying device and motivational tool for the revolution. It gave the animals a reason to work hard and fight for the farm, when necessary. However, as the pigs became more powerful, they found it necessary to revise the commandmants. Thus, the commandment that "All animals are equal" becomes, "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others." Eventually, animalism is just another form of propaganda designed to help the pigs maintain power and material wealth.
