Things are not going well on Animal Farm. Bad weather and poorer planning are causing the animals to make more and more sacrifices. This leads to a mini-rebellion when the hens refuse to turn over their eggs. The threat of another revolution is on the horizon. In order to stop any more civil unrest, Napoleon reacts with great brutality. Supposedly, all the "enemies" of Napoleon make confessions and are then executed. This mirrors that Great Purge of 1937-38 in Russia when Stalin forced public trials and confessions out of many leaders accused of "crimes against the state." Because of the purges, many were too afraid to face up to Stalin and thus many animals are afraid to challenge Napoleon. He has successfully prevented another revolution by frightening the animals into submission.
