I have to write a dialogue based on an imagery conversation that might have taken place betweenNapoleon and Squealer just after the expulsion of Snowball. In this imagined dialogue Napoleon is instructing Squealer how to be an effective propaganda agent so as to entrench his power and dictatorship over the animals on the farm. Napoleon will give Squealer ideas on how to influence the animals and win them over to his dictatorship. Posted by neeleshin on Apr 6, 2009. |

After Snowball's expulsion, Napoleon also gets rid of the debates. We know that the animals did not take well to this news; "several of them would have protested if they could have found the right arguments" (p. 50). Squealer was probably bribed and/or threatened to do his job after Snowball's expulsion. I am sure that Napoleon promised to give him a fair share of the "profits" of Napoleon's leadership, or otherwise used the dogs to threaten Squealer. Squealer's propaganda relies on a few key strategies: 1) promote Napoleon and tarnish the memory of Snowball whenever possible ("I believe the time will come when we shall find that Snowball's part in [the battle of the Cowshed] was much exaggerated" - p. 51) It is uncertain, for me at least, whether Napoleon taught Squealer to be a propaganda-spreader, or whether he simply feeds the propaganda directly to Squealer and then asks Squealer to spread it. In other words, does Squealer know he is spreading lies and smoothing out wrongdoing, or does he believe sincerely in everything he says? You will have to decide that for yourself as you craft the dialogue. Posted by jessecreations on Apr 6, 2009. |
