Like The Bean Trees, Animal Dreams can be read as a quest narrative. Codi arrives in Grace to find herself and to find a connection to her past. She ends up, spiritually and symbolically, coming to terms with past, present, and future and bringing them together, bringing "order in the cosmos" as her name Cosima indicates. "Bracketed by death" by the losses of her mother and child, it is the third death, of Hallie, that allows Codi to find resolution and peace.
