As in all of Barbara Kingsolver's novels, social issues are an integral part of plot and character development in Animal Dreams. In this, her second novel, we follow Cosima (Codi) Noline as she returns to her hometown of Grace, Arizona, after a fourteen- year absence. Although she returns to Grace primarily to help care for her father, Homer, the town's sole doctor, who is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, Codi is also looking for direction and purpose in her life. She compares herself unfavorably to her younger sister Hallie, who has just left for Nicaragua to assist freedom...
