Animal Dreams can easily be compared to Kingsolver's first novel, The Bean Trees. Both novels feature female protagonists searching for purpose in life, and both of them find a place in a community and a commitment to social issues by the novel's end. Animal Dreams clearly shows Kingsolver's growth as a novelist. Her second book is as emotionally satisfying as her first, but more refined artistically.
