Angle of Repose has two main characters, Lyman Ward and his grandmother, Susan Burling Ward. Lyman narrates the novel, telling his own story while he tells Susan's story. The novel is full of his interjections, comments, and autobiography. A one-time college professor, he has lost half of one leg and his ability to turn his neck because of a bone disease.
