Prior, Louis, Belize, and Hannah are gathered at the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, Prior's favorite spot, four years later. The world has changed somewhat—the Berlin Wall has fallen, and, through the Russian leader Gorbachev's policy of "Perestroika," the Cold War seems to be over. Prior is living with his disease and plans to live longer still. Together, the group relates the story of the angel, Bethesda, who appeared in the Temple square in Jerusalem long ago.
