Being raised in poverty, with little parental support, can easily be described as a battle.  In battle, one must have fellow soldiers, compatriots to share the load or just the pain.  Brotherhood does this for the McCourt boys.  Although separated by age, they are in the same situation.  The are both trying to come of age - to learn about life, relationships, sex, survival - and they are often misunderstood or ridiculed by the people they encounter, children and adults alike.  By having one another, they feel connected and supported.
