He believes the supermarket manager has hurt their feelings and he wants them to realize he is on their side. In addition, I think he naively believes that the supermarket manager might apologize to the girls for his remarks about the way they are dressed. Ironically, Sammy is totally ignored by the girls, quits his job in a huff, and now knows "life will be harder" for him in the future. So, instead of achieving his goals, Sammy gets a lesson in maturity.
