Momaday's story cycle "The Strange and True Story of My Life with Billy the Kid" has been published in a number of places both before and after the publication of The Ancient Child. One of the more interesting publications was in American West Magazine which also featured paintings by Momaday, called The Billy the Kid Suite, a series of ink-and-watercolor portraits of the characters Momaday featured in his depiction of Billy's short and violent life.
