When Amos arrives with his family in Jaffrey, New Hampshire with the intent of settling there and working as a tanner, the constable first greets him with a warning to be on his way. It is his duty to warn them off, in order to "(free) the town of any liability for their support should they ever become impoverished". Although his "welcome" is not a welcome at all, he personally "(doesn't really) care what the...

Through all of his trials and tribulations, Amos always remains humble. Even as a prince, he never sees himself as being better than others. He learns skills he needs to become economically dependent. He takes pride in his work and craftsmanship. He respects himself and others. Amos is a noble character who teaches us responsibility, self-respect, and to care about others and nature. He makes the best out of any situation he must deal with,...

Even though Amos was a prince, he understood he worked for the people, not the other way around. He took pride in his work, exhibits self-respect, and he responds nonviolently to racial slights. He remains sensitive to the feelings of others. As a result, Amos wins the respect and trust of most. He took people in need into his home, and kept his family well provided for. Family, economic freedom, and self respect are good values to possess.

I would certainly consider him heroic. Although at one time he was a prince, he never felt that entitled him to feel superiority. He believes in hard work, economic independence, and helping whenever possible. He take sin Polly Burdoo, who has been freed, because her family cannot afford her.
How many of them can you include?

I'd say they include the dedication on his tombstone, as well as the statement he makes on the page before:

"You can come any time now," he said, looking skyward, "for I'm ready."

"But don't you want your freedom?" Celia would ask Amos time and again.
"No," he would reply," not yet awhile."
