There is a Greek system, which about 20% of AU students participate in. The fraternities and sororities function more as active clubs, and while they definitely contribute to the social life at AU, it does not revolve around them. As many students will tell you, it's there if you want it, but you can absolutely not participate.

Since AU is not a huge state university, the classes usually wont exceed 200 people. And if they do, they are usually lecture-style intro classes to major topics, such as macro and micro economics and psychology. After those classes, the classes get substantially smaller. The average class size is about 27 students, which definitely differs according to the subject. We are fortunate enough to be in a small enough college that class sizes...

Yes, this is available to students. The health center has reasonable hours, and students can either use their health insurance cards or sign up for the university insurance. Personal counseling is also available to students. Students can make appointments at no cost. The reasons for seeking counseling is very wide, especially for college students finding themselves in rough and confusing times. I know personally that it is a very excellent...

Sometimes the things I enjoy are the very same things I dislike. For example, it's refreshing to know you are not just a number here. The class sizes are very small, and most of the professors will find it easy to learn the names of their students, something you wouldn't find as much in a huge state school. Also, while walking around campus you see familiar faces around which give the campus a real community feel. On the other hand,...

Yes, while there are no all freshman dorms, every freshman has to live on campus in one of the 5 dorms. Something unique to AU is there is no "roomate survey", so basically it is a random match. Most people have no problems with their roomates, even with a random match, but if so, there are opportunities to switch out.

Although many people assume AU is not a "party school", there are definitely options for everyone, whether you are looking to party, or if that isn't really your thing. Freshman year many of the parties are frat parties, however since we don't have a frat row, it can take a while to get to the houses. Once people start moving off campus and getting their own apartments, apartment parties start getting more prevalent and the party disgression...

Many of the most popular, and probably best majors to AU, are anything with "International" in them! This school boasts an amazing School of International Service, which is unique compared to many colleges. Also the school I am in, the School of Communication, has many concentrations to chose from within Communications, which is great considering other schools may only have one major which tries to cover everything (broadcast journalism,...

Freshmen are required to take both an English class and a Math class (these can be tested out of through the AP placement tests). There are four six- credit English classes to choose from, including College Writing and Honors English. However, getting a 4 or 5 on the AP English test fulfills this requirement. The math requirement can be completed by earning a C of better in any Math 15X or above class. This can also be fulfilled by getting a...
