An American Tragedy | About the Author

Theodore Dreiser, a prominent American author and journalist, was born on August 27, 1871 in the rural town of Terre Haute, Indiana. He grew up in a family of Christian fundamentalists, an experience that shaped many themes in his writings.

Dreiser modeled some characters in his novels after people he knew in his own life. The title character of Sister Carrie, for instance, resembled Dreiser's sister Emma, and Clyde Griffiths of An American Tragedy largely resembled Dreiser himself.
