An American Tragedy is based on the actual case of Chester Gillette, who murdered his pregnant girlfriend Grace Brown at Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks in the summer of 1906. The protagonist of An American Tragedy, Clyde Griffiths, comes from a Midwestern town and a poor family of fundamental Christians, whom Clyde leaves at his first opportunity to pursue his dreams of a better life.
