american pastoral /philip roth when and how does roth go from being presented with svede's story re: mery to uncovering it? where is the transition?

roth goes fr: being a part of a high school reunion to a book about svede etal. but i don't see the transition. i don't see how he makes the switch fr: his story to someone else's story. please advise.
