Student Life

87% of undergraduates are from out of state, mostly the Middle Atlantic. Students are from 50 states, 106 foreign countries, and Canada. 67% are white; 10% African American; 10% foreign nationals. The average age of freshmen is 18; all undergraduates, 20. 11% do not continue beyond their first year; 70% remain to graduate.

Housing

4000 students can be accommodated in college housing, which includes single-sex and coed dormitories and off-campus apartments. In addition, there is an international-intercultural hall, honors floors, and special-interest floors, including a community service floor. All dorms are smoke-free. On-campus housing is guaranteed for all 4 years. 65% of students live on campus. Alcohol is not permitted. Upperclassmen may keep cars.

Activities

14% of men belong to 10 national fraternities; 16% of women belong to 13 national sororities. There are 180 groups on campus, including art, band, cheerleading, chess, choir, chorale, chorus, computers, dance, debate, drama, ethnic, film, forensics, gay, honors, international, jazz band, literary magazine, musical theater, newspaper, orchestra, pep band, photography, political, professional, radio and TV, religious, social, social service, student government, symphony, and yearbook. Popular campus events include Family Weekend, Founders Day Ball, and Campus Beautification Day.

Sports

There are 9 intercollegiate sports for men and 10 for women, and 16 intramural sports for men and 17 for women. Facilities include a 6000-seat gym, 2 swimming pools, hockey and soccer fields, a softball diamond, an all-purpose field, cardiovascular and strength training equipment, weight rooms, courts for tennis, basketball, and volleyball, an aerobics studio, an indoor jogging track, and an outdoor, 6-lane tartan track.

Disabled Students

95% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, lowered telephones, special housing, and a university shuttle equipped to accommodate students in wheelchairs are available.

Campus Safety & Security

Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, self-defense education, security escort services, and shuttle buses. There are informal discussions, pamphlets/posters/films, emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, safety orientation programs, alarms and closed-circuit cameras, and posted crime alerts.
