Wells wrote that America had “a vast and increasing proportion of unassimilable aliens in her substance” leading to “an ever-intensifying complication.” Among these “aliens,” he listed “South European peasants, Russian Jews, and the like.” He then proceeded with intensely anti-Semitic sentiments, focusing on what he perceived as the self-isolation of the Jews.
