Definition

The condition known as restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a movement disorder caused by an irresistible urge to move the legs due to unpleasant sensations. It occurs primarily during times of relaxation, such as when the patient is trying to go to sleep.

Description

Most frequently, RLS troubles people over age 40. Almost half of patients over age 60 who complain of insomnia are diagnosed with RLS. Those who have a family history of it may have trouble with it as younger adults, or even as children. It is not usually described as painful, although some may complain of a disagreeable creeping, tugging, or aching sensation.
