All the Pretty Horses | Characters
The novel's protagonist, John Grady Cole, is a sixteen-year-old who, as the novel opens, has to deal with the death of his grandfather. This was his mother's father, and upon this death John Grady's mother decides to sell the ranch which John Grady had counted on being allowed to manage. His grandfather has died; his parents are divorced; his father is dying of cancer; and he feels dispossessed and cheated out of his dream. Feeling he has little to hold him, he sets out with Lacey Rawlins to find work on a grand ranch in Mexico, which they think of as a kind of promised land.
