   Yes, actually, Alice Walker wrote other things besides short stories, novels, and poetry.  Though most famous for her novel "The Color Purple," Ms. Walker had an impact in nonfiction as well.  Here are some examples of her work in this area:

   Alice Walker is also an accomplished essayist (even working as an editor at Ms. magazine for a time.)  Some of her essays include  "An Open Letter to Barack Obama" that was published on Theroot.com, and "We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For."

   "Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina, and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about."

   So, as you can see, Ms. Walker has had a rich writing life beyond the "make believe" worlds that we associate her with.
