The quotation from The Alchemist relates to the notion that love is the driving force of the universe. It's love of people, country, self...whatever one loves...that motivates us in life and pushes us to become our best. When you love and are loved, then you allow yourself to become part of that universal driving force and part of the universe itself. If love allows us to become one with the universe, then whatever happens in that universe happens within us. In this way, we are all connected, and whatever happens to one affects all. It's kind of like the idea of the Butterfly Effect. According to this concept, a butterfly can flutter its wings in the western hemisphere and set off a chain reaction that can become a hurricane in the eastern hemisphere. Allowing oneself to love and be loved can have a similar ripple effect, although different results (we hope!)
