One important lesson Santiago learns is through the words (and inaction) of the crystal merchant. The crystal merchant, when asked by Santiago why he never travelled to Mecca, answers that "having the dream of traveling is more important than the actual accomplishing." Santiago witnesses firsthand the results (or lack thereof) of not fulfilling one's personal legend. This helps to motivate Santiago to fulfull his personal legend.

While the straight forward answer to this question is the soul of the world, what does that mean? The soul of the world has to do with the author's attitude toward finding meaning in our individual lives. The author argues that inside all of us are the answers we seek. The challenge lies in asking the right questions, being open to answers (in the form of opportunities- omens), and in moving in the direction that these opportunities seem to...

The all is one metaphor has to do with one of the underlying themes in The Alchemist. Namely, that we all have the ability to tap into a "universal force" for understanding. This notion that the answers to our big questions have been posed before and their answers are available to all those who seek them. The answers are there because one of the author's points is that people ask these questions already knowing (whether or not it's on a...

A personal legend, as it's referred to in The Alchemist, is one's destiny in life. It's identifying our purpose in life and pursuing it. In the story, the main character, Santiago, goes in search of his personal legend. Along the way, he encounters many other characters who help him either directly or indirectly accomplish his goals. The story is an allegory for those wishing to live an examined life. It's a story which requires the reader to...

As in much of this story, this question is a matter of interpretation. Keeping in mind the nature of the story's theme, i.e., identifying and following one's personal legend, the reader can come to certain conclusions.
The scene involving the dead hawks comes on the heels of Santiago coming face to face with The Alchemist. The Alchemist rides in on horse amidst a swirling sea of dust. It's quite a vivid scene. The hawks are an omen. Like so...

Like life itself, Santiago's perceptions about himself and his world begin to change as his life experiences change. Unlike many, however, it's not so much the changes that take place, but his reactions to those changes that make the difference.
At first, Santiago's world view are colored by his rather provincial upbringing. His journey out of his known world bring him into contact with people who and experiences that open his eyes to the...

The king opens Santiago's eyes to the possibility that there are signs/omens all around him and that he needs to be on the look out for these as he goes about his life. Sort of like when you first learn a new vocabulary word. Did you ever notice that once you learn a new word, you start noticing that word more? The thing is, that new word you're starting to notice isn't just appearing for the first time around you. It's been there before. You...

The alchemist tells the story of the poet and the soldier probably to illustrate the idea that sometimes we can influence our world's in unintended ways. On the surface, it would seem that the soldier might have been able to have a more profound impact on those around him. Powerful soldier, leader of many, outwardly respected by many. And yet, on the other hand, is his son the poet. Perhaps quieter by nature, less assuming, and not having the...

I love this question. Thanks for posting. I think the idea of romantic love shouldn't necessarily be confined to that of being between a woman and a man. In the story, there is a romantic love (in the traditional meaning) between Santiago and Fatima. But is there more to it than that? (Nice loaded question, huh?) The whole thrust of the story is how romantic love has the potential to drive one toward his or her dreams. While on the periphery...

One's personal legend could be that inner voice (soul?) that speaks. I've taught my students (and myself) that it's this voice that helps us to identify our purpose in life and carry us towards this purpose. In the story, the struggle between those that heed the calling of the voice (Santiago) and those that don't (crystal merchant) is a main thrust of Santiago's quest. How does one reconcile this notion of following one's heart with the...
