When judging something appropriate or inappropriate, one always has to keep the context in mind—to ask, in other words, "Appropriate for who or what?"
This book is appropriate as a literary treatment of the evils and experiences of slavery. It is appropriate as a way of humanizing those who suffered and show that they existed as part of living culture before being enslaved. It is appropriate as a way of communicating history relatively painlessly (as far as the reading experience).
