The main character, Casey Singleton, is a thirtyish executive in a beleaguered high-tech company and a recently divorced mother of a small child. She is also a woman in a heavily male-dominated industry, as well as a vice-president in an era where few women ever reach that corporate rank. To survive she has to be tough yet still feminine and approachable. She does not care for the kind of coarse language that the men around her use, yet she cannot be embarrassed around it, either.
