The Duke (whose full name was Guidobaldo della Rovere) was one of Michelangelo's patrons. He was convinced to purchase the works by artist and architect Vassari. According to critic Frederika Jacobs, "Vasari visited Venice, bringing with him copies of two of Michelangelo's paintings: Leda and the Swan and Venus Reclining with Cupid. Vasari hoped to present the paintings to the duke of Urbino, another of Titian's most important patrons." (Titian was probably the top artist of his time, and for Michelangelo to have his works purchased by the Duke as well was quite a compliment indeed.)
