    The apple picker in this poem seems to be so tired and exhausted after his apple picking that he and we are unable to determine whether he is asleep or awake. The poem is written at the end of the day, and he says "I am done with apple picking now... I am drowsing off." In this dream-like state, he reflects on his task and his life. It is clear that he is so exhausted that he is seeing life in a different way - a way that changes his perception, just as he viewed the world through "a pane of glass" earlier that morning. He is also remembering all the work he has done this day, talking of the "ten thousand fruit" that he had to pick carefully. It is in this state that he dreams of apples, and dwells upon the philosophical symbolism of their significance.
