The Roman god Vulcan is the equivalent of the Greek god Hephaestus, and Venus is the equivalent of Aphrodite. In Greek mythology, it was Hephaestus who split open Zeus's head with an ax, and Athena popped out. Aphrodite did marry Hephaestus, but, according to the eNotes character analysis of her:

her frequent relationships and the children she had with various other gods...angered her husband. After learning about Aphrodite's love for Ares, Hephaestus created a fine metal mesh to catch the lovers in bed.
