Fama is the personification of rumor.  At the beginning of book 4, Fama brings the news of Aeneas and Dido's "marriage" which is in great contrast to the news of Dido's suicide at the end.  At the beginning of book 4, Fama acts as the town gossip. At the end, she is a messenger of death.
