Vergil (his name is commonly spelled "Virgil" in English, but "Vergil" is the proper Latin form) was the greatest of Latin poets of the Golden Age of Rome and the most influential Latin poet of all time. He was born into fairly humble circumstances on October 15, 70 B.C., in Andes, a small village near Mantua in what is now northern Italy. Although many details of Vergil's life remain unclear, his father was probably a laborer who later became a landowner, perhaps by marrying the daughter of his employer—a farmer, and possibly a beekeeper.
