Huck and Jim travel downriver hoping to intercept the Ohio river in Illinois which would signify their arrival in the free states. They miss the city of Cairo because of fog, and continue traveling.

The current is strong, and in 5 days they reach St. Louis, Missouri, the largest city on the Mississippi River at the time. It is after passing by St. Louis that the real dangers begin for Jim and Huck--robbers, murderers, con artists, thunderstorms, and a deeper penetration into the slave territory all contribute to the adventures the two of them share as they form a deep and abiding bond of friendship.
