   Huckleberry Finn is a coming of a age novel about a young boy who befriends a slave in the pre-civil war south.  It depicts a ride on a raft down the Mississippi River, which symbolizes a journey of freedom and growth.  Twain published it in 1880.  Enotes has an excellent overview as well as chapter summary of the novel, and I provide a link to his below.

   Huckleberry Finn is being raised by the Widow Douglas, because his father is a cruel drunk and his mother is dead Huck has come into quite a bit of money. Huck has not been taught the social graces expected of young boys, and he is mischievous by nature. Huck struggles with trying to be himself, despite the best efforts of the widow, who is trying to make him into a respectable christian, schoolboy, and person. Pap, Huck's father, wants the money badly, and through a clueless judge, gets him. Pap keeps him locked up, goes out and gets drunk, and then beats him. Huck runs away by faking his death, and along the way, teams up with Jim, who is the Widow Douglas's sister's slave. They escape together, although Huck has misgivings of helping a slave leave, with the intention of getting Jim to the free states.During their adventures, they come across "aristocrats" who in actuality are scam artists. In the end, Jim is freed by a provision in Ms. Watson's will, and Huck decides he has had enough "Civilizin'"
