The descriptive words in this one are good. Try removing the adjectives "wicked" and "clever" and see how the sentence changes, making it much less meaningful:
"Ah, me! it's a wicked world, and when a clever man turns his brains to crime it is the worst of all."
Or this one, in which the "visitor" comes to engage Holmes' unique services; the adjectives "manifold" and "wickedness" are modifying the human heart, whose many ways of becoming evil keep Holmes employed.
"But I have heard, Mr. Holmes, that you can see deeply into the manifold wickedness of the human heart."
