    Helen Stoner describes the Roylott family history to Sherlock Holmes beginning with how the Roylotts of Stoke Moran were among the richest in England at one time. She continues that within the last century, four heirs to the fortune were dissolute and wasteful and the family was finally completely ruined by gambling. Her step-father, the heir to what would have been a fortune, was able to borrow money from a relative, obtain a medical degree and move to Calcutta where he developed a lucrative medical practice but there he beat his butler to death in a fit of rage and barely escaped a capital sentence. He later married Helen’s mother and she had a considerable sum of money which she bequeathed to him. But after she died, Helen’s stepfather changed dramatically, abandoned his vision of creating a practice in London and shut himself in his house rarely exiting except when to engage in quarrels with whomever he met. The last quarrel had ended so badly that Helen paid all the money she could gather to avoid another public exposure.
