The Adventure of the Speckled Band Group
Question:
Any theories on why Doyle wrote The Adventure of the Speckled Band, which features an imaginary animal, namely, the swamp adder?
I have looked it up on the Internet. There is definitely no such animal as the swamp adder. So why did Doyle write the mystery of the Adventure of the Speckled Band? And please don't answer Laurence M. Klauber's theory, I already have it.

Well, you may not like this theory, because it isn't particularly theoretical, but I'd say that he simply made it up or misspoke. There are a number of such slips and more basic slips in the Holmes stories (wonderful though they are), places where either Holmes or Doyle or both make mistakes.
See, for example, this site: http://www.sherlockian.net/world/cruxes.html
