I believe the sense of danger is Macon having to think about the divorce proceedings that Sarah has had a lawyer prepare. He couldn't handle it because it really would put an end to their relationship in writing.

The danger that he sensed was that he had to finalize the divorce proceedings with his wife, Sarah which he was unwillingly to do so. After a lengthy relationship, it would be very hard and difficult to just separate- there would be a lot of emotional problems and setbacks. He was unwillingly to let go of this relationship and wanted her to change her mind. He couldn't accept the facts and handle anything of the matter as if they divorce officially, this would put the end to their marriage and they would be separated- no relations to each other.
The main reason why Sarah leave him is because she felt that Macon was not really "a comfort in need" to her after the death of their beloved son. She also needs a place of her own and felt oppressed and neglected that Macon was always in his own world, self-centred and didn't have any contact with the outside world to a point that it is irritating and disturbing. She also feels herself going away from the mortal world and becoming less sociable, so it did scared her a bit and prompted her to divorce Macon, for the benefit for each other and the children as well
