I agree that Juniors experience at Reardon is almost unrealistic. After the first few days Junior barely faces any issues. I would have thought that he would have had a much harder time in a school where he is the only Indian. The other thing that I did not like about the book was that emotions often crossed over into completely different emotions. For example when Junior finds out about his sisters death he goes into fits of laughter. I did...

This was one of my favorite books that I have read in school. The language wasn't completely cryptic for once which was nice change. Although the writing was not that complicated I found that within his writing Alexie wove a lot of metaphors and chose his words very specifically to convey a certain point. I really enjoyed this style of writing.
I would defiantly recommend this book. It was a book that kept me entertained all the way through...

I did like the book. The style was very easy to understand but at the same time it was poetic and had a certain rhythm to it, which I really liked. Some books are so metaphorical that it's hard to understand anything about it. It was a fun read too. The subject interested me, since I've always been interested in stories about stereotypes and more serious subjects. The way the author put things was funny and sarcastic at times, but it...

The notion of the hyphenated American lies at the heart of Alexie's work. Junior feels as if he is not completely immersed in either the Native American world or the White setting. This raises an interesting issue of social constructs of identity as well as the notion of adolescence. On one hand, Junior can be seen as a symbol of the hyphenated American- one who straddles multiple worlds of experience and narrative scope. Along these...

I think that Junior is so brave in this novel. He forges on ahead even when his best friends disappear and his community turns against him.
A good way to state that theme would have to do with pushing on to acheive goals even when there are roadblocks in the way.
In the book, Junior is a better person for sticking to his own dreams and ideas and he is stronger for having endured all the hardships.

I think that a theme worthy of exploration in this book is how identity is created when multiple forces exert simultaneous influence on an individual. The novel is a bildungsroman, or coming of age work, in which an adolescent is forced to develop their own sense of identity with multiple factors converging upon him. The notion of cultural identity between being Native American and being accepted into White society occupies a major...

Although there are a few other minor characters in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the one that I would consider to be most significant is Rowdy. Rowdy graces this story to deal with the subject of disjointed friendship in regards to these fractured Native American lives. Rowdy is friends with Junior, despite the fact that Rowdy has a very abusive father. Both Rowdy's dad and Junior's dad share the tendency toward...

I think in addressing this question, the most powerful theme that is evident is the reclamation of voice. A central idea of this book is the notion that a person's voice can be authentic and claimed back despite social marginalization and political powers that seek to silence it. Ask yourself about occasions in the book where we can see Arnold fight to reclaim his voice. Another theme is the idea that a person's identity is forged...

I love this book, so it's very hard to choose something to change!
I would say the only thing would be to have the main character have to "suffer" a bit more at his new high school. When he gets there he stands up to one bully one time and then suddenly has gained the respect of the entire school. In addition to this he is a star athlete and his girlfriend is one of the most beautiful and popular girls in the school!
It almost seems to easy...
