Where in the actual novel can I locate Faulkner's longest sentence (1,287 words) in "Absalom, Absalom?"? I cannot find it in the Guinness Book of World Records on-line or in the copies at my campus library.

My students cannot believe that a sentence can be that long without being a run-on, so I would like to analyze it with them.

Answers:

  1. I wasn't able to find the actual sentence, but I found this in Absalom, Absalom's Wikipedia entry:

The Guinness Book of World Records has an entry for what it claims is the longest proper sentence in English. It cites a sentence from "Absalom, Absalom! containing 1,287 words.

You can buy the book and find it yourself. Or maybe, you can try Amazon, they have some sneak preview that let you see excerpts of the book (not the entire one through)
