In John Knowles's A Separate Peace, Gene Forrester returns to visit New Hampshire's Devon School after a fifteen-year absence. He recalls his complex relationship with his roommate and best friend, Phineas. His narrative begins during the summer of 1942, when Phineas goads him into jumping off a tree into the Devon River.
