Bobby Zane recommended that they name a game after the Blitzkrieg.  In German, Blitzkrieg was named so because it included surprise attacks, "Lighting fast" rapid advances into enemy territory, with coordinated massive air attacks, which struck and shocked the enemy as if it was struck by lightning. The German military in World War 2 achieved most of its great victories with the Blitzkrieg tactic. This chapter also mentions Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Josef Stalin. In this chapter, even though Gene hated jumping from the tree, he says, “I always jumped. Otherwise I would have lost face with Phineas, and that would have been unthinkable.”

In Chapter 7 references are made to puttees, coverings for the lower leg that soldiers in the army wore.  Also the pejorative term for a German is used:  Kraut.  An allusion is made about Pearl Harbor, the U.S. naval base in Hawaii bombed by the Japanese on 7 December 1941.  In Chapter 8 the boys speak of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of FDR, and Madame Chiang Kai-shek, wife of the head of the Chinese government during WWII.
