In A Separate Peace, how is Leper's reaction to leaping from the tree different from that of the others?

    As in all he does, Leper's reaction to jumping from the tree was quite individual:

    Leper closed his mouth as though forever. He didn't argue or refuse. He didn't back away. He became inanimate.

    When faced with the challenge, Leper is simply paralyzed. He cannot respond intellectually to the situation in which he finds himself. He lacks the ability to express his feelings or take a position. His first reaction indicates his basic nature. Leper cannot function in society, even within the society of his friends. He tags along, wanting to be a part of life, but he remains on the periphery.
