In the beginning of the story we see Henry is indifferent to the war and its devasting effects on all who experience it. Later when he is wounded and goes to Milan for medical care he meets and is captivated with the beauty Catherine. The foreshadowing comes in to play when we know that it will be easy to run away with the nurse because he is so indifferent to the war to begin with that he would not be bothered much by the fact that he deserted the war, his company, and his fellow soldiers.
