About the Author: John Paul Stevens (1920–) graduated from the University of Chicago and Northwestern Law School, and clerked for Supreme Court Justice Rutledge in 1947-1948. Before serving on the Court, he worked in private practice and taught at Northwestern and the University of Chicago. From 1970 to 1975, he served on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
