About the Authors: Sandra Day O'Connor (1930–) attended Stanford Law School, graduating third in her class. Because of gender bias, though, no firm would hire her, so she went to work for the government. In 1981, she was nominated by President Ronald Reagan (served 1981–1989) and became the first woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court. William H.
