About the Author: Sandy Mendler is a senior designer at Hellmuth, Obata and Kassenbaum, an architectural firm in Washington, D.C. The firm, known especially for its sportsfacility commissions, is also a leader in using sustainable, or "green," design in large-scale projects. Mendler leads the firm's sustainable-design team, and she is on the board of directors of the United States Green Building Council.
