About the Author: David Carson (1956–) was born in Texas and earned a degree in sociology at San Diego State University. Early influences on his graphic design style included childhood travels in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the West Indies, and a three-week graphic design workshop in Switzerland. After teaching high school sociology for a time, Carson, who was also a top-ranked competitive surfer, became a graphic designer for Transworld Skateboarding magazine in 1983.
