About the Artist: Philip Glass (1937–) was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was introduced to classical music by listening to the "offbeat" music of records that sold poorly in his father's radio repair and record shop. He began studying violin at age six and the flute at eight. After graduating from the University of Chicago at nineteen with an A.B. degree in 1956, he studied composition at the Juilliard School in New York City and received an M.S. in 1964.
